Horst Görtz

I was born in Solingen in 1937. After having completed school and vocational training I entered the German army. In 1958, I started my IT career and became a “BULL Organisation technician”. In 1955, I joined the headquarters of BULL in Frankfurt, Hessen, the BOG Frankfurt, which later became the Rhein-Main Computer-Centre GmbH & Co KG. From 1974 onwards I was general manager of the Rhein-Main Computer Centre (RM), a service centre for medium-sized businesses. In those years RM was one of the leading computer centres in Germany. In 1983 I founded Utimaco Software GmbH, which specialized in IT-security. In 1996 the company was converted into Utimaco Safeware AG. Up to 1997 I acted as chairman of the board of directors. I was chairman of the supervisory board until spring 2005, and afterwards I was appointed honorary chairman of the supervisory board. Utimaco quoted on 16.02.1999.

Besides, I am member of the supervisory board of SÜSS Micro Tec AG, Garching, as well as of two boards of trustees in the area of IT security.

I was a member of the board of directors of the Association of German Computer Centres (VDRZ), of the German Federal Association of Managing Consultants (BDU), German Delegate for the European Computing Services Association (ECSA) and their vice president. In 1995, I became a “Member of the European 500”, “Entrepreneur 1996” and “EKS Award Winner 1996”. In 2001, I received the University Medal of the Ruhr-University Bochum. In 2002, I was appointed the honorary doctorate senator of the Technical University of Darmstadt and in 2004 “Dr. Ing. Eh.” of the Faculty for Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Ruhr-University Bochum. In 2005, I was awarded the Service Award for Professional Excellence by Rotary International. In June 2009 the Federal President Köhler bestowed me the Federal Cross of Merit first class.
